Good Eats at Max & Zelda's

Hey, maybe the curse has been lifted from the building formerly known as Peggy Sue's on Highway 16, just past the high school. It's spent time as several restaurants in the last few years and none of them have stuck (because they stank), but the new Max and Zelda's seems promising. The food served is good stick to your ribs stuff - nothing too fancy, but there are two really noteworthy items to try: the rolls served with the meals is reason enough alone to visit the cafe - I contemplated asking for seconds). And they do an excellent job on their sides - the veggies are cooked to perfection, something one doesn't always find this side of the Pecos. They need to beef up their salad menu and improve their service (the staff is polite, but the wait is simply too long), and who knows, this place might last long enough for us to remember its name.

Did you meet Max or Zelda?

Max & Zelda's is actually very nice. I took my parents there (twice now). Everything was cooked almost perfectly, which is rare, so to speak. The owners stopped by our table (I don't believe there was a Max or a Zelda between them...), and were very engaging. I actually asked about recent failures (first an Italian, then a Tex-Mex place) and they said that they aren't really chasing the tourist $$$. Instead, they're obviously focusing their energies on serving up some really solid food, and are more interested in traffic from local customers. They've inherited the challenge of being so far removed downtown, a spot ideally suited like my parents who would rather avoid the Hauptstrasse on the weekends. And definitely consider the specials (I remember the guy who creates much of them from another restaurant, and he'd probably come to the table to personally give you details). God, I feel like I'm doing PR for the place. As a caregiver for elderly parents, I've just had a couple of very pleasant experiences there, a place where me Mums and Da were treated with sincere courtesy, respect, and a great plate of food cooked to spec. It's hard for me to ask, really, for much more than that.
